
Southern Style Smoked Collard Greens
Tender collard greens slow-cooked with smoked ham hocks for a traditional side dish.
Ingredients
- 2 bunches collard greens
- 2 pieces smoked ham hocks
- 1 medium onion
- 4 cloves garlic
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper

Wash the collard greens thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or grit. Remove the stems and tear the leaves into bite-sized pieces.

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 medium chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent.

Add 4 minced garlic cloves to the pot and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant.

Add the 2 smoked ham hocks to the pot along with 4 cups of chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the torn collard greens, 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir well to combine.

Cover the pot and let the collard greens simmer on low heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender and flavorful.

After cooking, remove the ham hocks and let them cool slightly. Shred the meat from the bones and return the meat to the pot. Discard the bones.

Stir in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar for added flavor. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
