Dampfnudeln - Steamed Yeast Dumplings
Soft and fluffy steamed dumplings served with vanilla sauce, a sweet treat for breakfast.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (about 110°F or 43°C). Remove from heat and stir in the active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, remaining sugar, salt, and melted butter (cooled slightly). Mix well.

Add the yeast mixture and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.

In a large pot, add 1 cup of water and bring to a simmer. Place a steamer basket or a heatproof plate inside the pot, ensuring it does not touch the water.

Arrange the dumpling balls in the steamer basket, leaving space between them. Cover the pot with a lid and steam for about 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are puffed and cooked through.

While the dumplings are steaming, prepare the vanilla sauce by combining 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a saucepan. Heat gently until warm but do not boil.
